I found this article particularly interesting as there has been much debate over the Arctic sea ice and its loss. This article is clearly pushing for us to take a gentle step back and realise that unfortunately, we know very little. A model at the end of the day is nothing but a hypothesis with a great user interface and they do not paint the full picture (although some of those GCM gifs do make a pretty sight)
The author also acknowledges that what he states about these planetary waves, may simply be one piece of the problem and in no way is he trivializing the effects of global warming. I was hoping he said this as there have been many studies showing that increased energy has partly driven increased levels of convection in the South Pacific.
Bottom line: Do your best to understand but don't think you have understood.
"Unless global warming starts to accelerate at a rate far beyond what we've seen, it's going to be a long time before weather statistics change so much from the human signal that it would become clearly detectable in the presence of natural variability."
